The new Conservation Aquarium is conceived as a spatial narrative about flow, circularity, and the relationship between humans and aquatic ecosystems. Visitors follow a deliberately choreographed loop that places two spatial anchors at its core: the expansive shark tank and the atmospherically dense Amazon basin. The sequence of shifting proportions, changing light conditions, and precise visual orientations creates an immersive dramaturgy that culminates in the double-height shark hall.
The building volume develops a gently modelled geometry that integrates respectfully into the historic context of Schönbrunn while asserting its own contemporary architectural stance. Horizontal façade striations, angled incisions, and carefully framed exterior spaces evoke maritime landscapes and generate a dialogue between solidity and movement. Elevated terraces and lowered plateaus extend the building into the surrounding park and enable both lingering and programmatic connections.
Inside, the architecture acts as a calm, materially restrained backdrop for the staging of the underwater worlds. Exposed concrete, dark natural stone, and subtle surface treatments intentionally recede, allowing the aquatic habitats to take maximum prominence. The technical infrastructure follows clear principles of efficiency, durability, and ease of maintenance — supporting the long-term, sustainable care of the species.
The project creates a new place where architectural precision, scientific communication, and species conservation merge into a cohesive whole, presenting a contemporary understanding of experiential and educational architecture.
