Indoor Swimming pool, Neustadt
Neustadt an der Waldnaab

Located at the heart of the school campus in Neustadt an der Waldnaab, the new indoor swimming pool serves both the Gymnasium and the wider public. Positioned directly adjacent to the existing school buildings, the project strengthens the site’s sports infrastructure while integrating seamlessly into its surroundings.

The design is shaped by two overlapping square volumes whose interaction forms a clear architectural identity. The main pool hall remains legible as a rectangular body, while an L-shaped volume wraps around its corner, accommodating the changing rooms, sanitary areas, and circulation spaces. Visitors approach around the corner and arrive at the long side of the pool, where immediate views open to both the 25-meter pool and the teaching pool. The compact timber structure creates an efficient, warm, and welcoming environment suited to school use and public swimming alike.

Inside, the hall is characterized by an undulating ceiling that introduces an organic spatial quality contrasting with the rational geometry of the plan. The ceiling rises above the diving tower to create a generous sense of height, shaping both the acoustics and the atmosphere of the space. Rectangular in plan yet fluid in section, the building offers a memorable spatial sequence: moving from the precisely organized service areas into the bright, dynamic pool hall creates an experience that harmoniously blends functional clarity with expressive architectural form.
